In RCC construction, the checks that matter most happen before and during the concrete pour: correct steel and cover, strong and level shuttering, the right concrete mix, proper compaction and full curing. Once concrete sets, mistakes are hidden and expensive to fix.

You do not need an engineering degree to use this list. Walk the site with your contractor before each slab, column or beam is poured, and ask about anything that does not look right.

Steel reinforcement checks

  • Bar diameters and spacing match the structural drawing.
  • Steel is clean, free of loose rust, oil and mud.
  • Laps are of the specified length and staggered, not all at one point.
  • Stirrups and rings have properly bent hooks at the specified spacing.
  • Cover blocks are fixed under and beside the bars so steel is not touching shuttering.

Shuttering and formwork

Formwork must hold wet concrete without moving. Check that it is level and in line, the joints are tight enough to stop slurry leaking, and the props are firm and properly braced.

Ask for the shutter surfaces to be cleaned and oiled before steel is placed, and openings for pipes and sleeves to be fixed in advance rather than broken out later.

During the concrete pour

The mix

Use the specified grade. If concrete is mixed on site, measure materials consistently. Do not allow extra water just to make placing easier, because it weakens the concrete.

Placing and compaction

Concrete should be placed without long drops and compacted with a needle vibrator to remove air. Poor compaction leaves honeycombing: stony voids that weaken the member and let water in.

Test cubes

Ask for cube samples from each important pour, tested at 7 and 28 days. It is a simple record of whether the concrete reached its strength.

Curing and de-shuttering

Concrete gains strength with time and moisture. Slabs are usually ponded or kept wet, and columns are wrapped with wet hessian. Keep curing going for the full recommended period, which is especially important in Agra's hot, dry months.

Props under slabs and beams should stay in place until the engineer confirms they can be removed.

Rushing this stage is one of the most common shortcuts in RCC construction, and its effects show up as sagging slabs and cracks.

After casting

Inspect surfaces once the shuttering is removed. Small surface marks are normal, but large honeycombed patches, exposed steel or wide cracks should be reported to the engineer for proper repair. Once the frame is complete, roof and wet areas need treatment too, as covered in our roof waterproofing guide.

Conclusion

Good RCC construction comes down to discipline at every pour: right steel, right cover, tight formwork, proper mix, full compaction and patient curing. Use this checklist and you will catch most problems while they are still easy to fix.

Frequently asked questions

How long should RCC be cured?

Curing should continue for the full period recommended by your engineer; longer in hot, dry weather. Stopping early reduces strength and durability.

What is honeycombing in concrete?

Voids with exposed stones caused by poor compaction or a leaky formwork. Large patches weaken the member and need proper repair.

Why are cover blocks important?

They keep a layer of concrete around the steel, protecting it from moisture and rust, and help the member carry load as designed.

When can slab props be removed?

Only after the concrete has gained enough strength, as confirmed by the engineer. Removing them early can cause sagging or cracks.
